十八频道于1997年6月18日正式开播。2000年后进入快速发展期。2003年南京广电体制调整，成立广电集团，频道亦加入集团，成为南京广播电视台下8个电视频道之一。频道每天播出17小时，有线无线双重覆盖，其中有线覆盖60万户，无线可达安徽周边地区。节目类型包括新闻、影视剧、卡通、时尚、综艺、广告等。
十八频道对主流人群的影响力依赖于它的几个定位准确的栏目：
新闻资讯栏目《标点》，秉承其“新闻的另一种看法”和“好看又有用”的宗旨，给观众以独特的价值观和大量有用的生活资讯。《边看边说》栏目每天播出60分钟喜闻乐见的、可视性强的影视剧。每晚的《电影新视界》专以港台精品影片回放、海外优秀佳片展播，每天一部经典，尽在《电影新视界》，《电影新视界》。《听我韶韶》《思想力行动力》等
