潮州电视台按照广东省广播电视集团化改革的总体部署，由原潮州市广播电视局及其所属的潮州市电视台、潮州人民广播电台、潮州市广播电视网络中心等单位组成的潮州广播电视台，于2004年12月8日正式成立。
该台是潮州市委宣传部领导下的正处级事业单位，为南方广播影视传媒集团的成员单位，上级主管部门为潮州市文化广电新闻出版局，实行党委领导下的台长负责制。潮州广播电视台下辖广播节目中心、电视节目中心、广播电视新闻中心、广播电视网络中心、广告经营中心、技术中心、后勤服务中心、广播电视微波站、广播电视网站、广播电视报社等10个分支机构，有员工400多人。潮州广播电视台拥有广播电视、新闻网站、报纸等多种媒体。电视节目中心、广播节目中心各自办2套节目，节目信号覆盖潮州、汕头、揭阳三市以及福建省部分地区，覆盖人口超过1000万。全市已在2000年以前实现了行政村“村村通广播电视”，广播人口覆盖率达98%，电视人口覆盖率达98.5%。
