我国第一个市级电视台——吉林市电视台始建于1960年7月1日，而今走过了40年的历程。
吉林市电视台原名为吉林电视台，1978年改用现名。1960年正式播出黑白电视节目，1981年开始播出彩色电视节目。
四十年间，吉林市电视台已发展成为功能齐全，拥有三个频道，能制作各类电视节目，融新闻、娱乐、服务为一体的传播机构。目前，吉林市电视台播出节目的发射总功率为３２千瓦，每天用一频道、八频道、十六频道播出，节目覆盖面达到市区人口的百分之百。
目前，吉林市电视台有编播人员200人，其中拥有大专以上学历的150人，有高级职称20人，中级职称70人，初级职称60人。四十年来，吉林市电视台以“一切为了荧屏”为宗旨，发扬“敬业、开拓、创新、奉献”精神，经历了艰苦创业，自我完善，不断创新的阶段性发展，使荧屏五彩缤纷，绚丽多姿，亲切温馨，特色突出，显示了吉林市电视台闪光的业绩。
