新传媒5频道原名“第五波道”，于1963年11月23日启播，播放英语及马来语节目；1976年转作彩色广播。开播初期，英语节目以纪录片、地方戏曲、相声和新闻为主。直到1980年，新加坡广播电视台改组成新加坡广播局（新广），第五波道节目才走向多元化；1984年，第五波道变为全英语电视频道。
