1986年国家广电总局批准萍乡电视台正式开播。20多年来，萍乡电视台，始终坚持正确的舆论导向，紧扣“围绕中心抓宣传，精办节目促创收，技术拓新事业，深化改革要效能”的工作思路，努力将资源优势转化为效率优势、产业优势、竞争优势，萍乡电视事业不断发展壮大。
萍乡电视台设办公室、总编室、新闻部、专题部、网管部、技术部、广告中心等职能部门，拥有新闻综合、赣西、科学教育、影视资讯四个频道全天候播出。设有众多精彩栏目，全天播出自办节目10多个小时。萍乡电视台的节目覆盖萍乡及周边市县，覆盖人口达到500多万。
萍乡电视台紧盯电视科技前沿，不断更新技术装备。2003年5月，投资300万元建设的非线性编辑制作和播出系统投入使用，实现了制作和播出数字化、网络化，跨进了应用电视高新技术成果的先进行列。
