電視廣播有限公司是香港首個投得地面電視牌照的電視台，從1967年至1973年間是香港唯一一間地面電視台。由於香港電視廣播市場受政府發牌控制，曾經作為無線唯一競爭對手的亞洲電視收視長期低迷，而近年獲得電視牌照並播出的ViuTV、香港開電視等競爭對手又資歷尚淺，因此無線被視為是在長期缺乏實際競爭的情況下得以一***大，故坊間亦有「大台」之稱。
