嘉善县广播电视台前身是建立于1956年的嘉善县人民广播站。1986年成立嘉善县广播电视局，1988年9月分别建立嘉善人民广播电台、嘉善电视台，1994年10月建立嘉善有线电视台(筹)，1998年2月按照国家政策规定，实施广播电视播出机构合并，组建了嘉善广播电视台,实行三台合一、局台合一的管理体制。2005年实行局台分离，组建了嘉善县广播电视台。
嘉善县广播电视台内设十七个管理、业务工作职能部门和网络中心站，现有职工190多人，固定资产总值1.24亿元。坚持以新闻宣传为中心，广播电视节目质量不断提高。开办了《嘉善新闻》《新闻夜班车》《纪事》《人在嘉善》等20多档广播电视新闻和专题栏目。广播专题《和农民朋友谈水利建设》获全国二等奖,电视新闻节目连续两届荣获浙江省“十佳”,广播电视新闻节目综合抽评受到省级表彰。《纪事》栏目连续多年拍摄的三十多部电视纪录片节目已经陆续在美国斯科拉有线电视网播出。事业建设、产业经营不断拓展新领域、跃上新台阶。2003年新落成的嘉善广播电视中心占地30亩,20000多平方米,建筑面积18000多平方米,总投资近6000万元,广播电视采编制播及办公设施实现了数字化、网络化、现代化。广播全部采用先进的数字音频录播系统,电视全部实现数字一体化摄录、非线性编辑和硬盘播出。全县11个镇广播电视全部光缆联网,已形成有线广播、调频广播、有线电视、无线电视等相结合的混合广播电视共缆传输覆盖网,有线模拟电视基本普及,有线数字电视已经进入实质性推广阶段。利用广电宽带网络平台建成“中国·嘉善”政府综合门户网站、“嘉善热线”(浙江网络电视联盟会员网)和“嘉善政务办公网络”
