江阴的广播电视事业起步较早、发展较快， 在上级广电部门和市委、市政府的正确领导下，以“甘冒风险，无私奉献，刻苦钻研，勇攀高峰”的精神，在舆论宣传、事业发展、产业经营、改革创新以及自身建设等方面都取得了显著成绩，走在了全省市（县）同行前列。
1956年江阴就开办了有线广播，1987年建立江阴人民广播电台，1988年7月江阴电视台成立，1994年1月组建了江阴有线电视台。2001年10月，市广播电视局根据市委、市政府有关机构改革的总体部署要求，组织实施了广电体制改革，由广播电台、电视台、有线电视台和江阴广播电视宽带网络有限公司、各镇广播电视站及有关企业组建成广播电视集团，与市广播电视局实行两块牌子、两套班子，建有一个市属党委，下辖4个党支部，并建立健全了工、青、妇等群团组织。2008年11月完成第二轮体制改革，进行了彻底的“政企分开”、“局台分离”，形成了江阴广播电视宣传和经营齐头并进的初步格局。
